KnowledgeDrain

Information Technology (IT) is one of the boons to India.. I am personally one of the benefitters and strongly feel it has risen the status of many middle class families across the country.

IT has lot of advantages to India, such as rise in economy, employment rate, quality of life.. to name a few.. There are few cons because of this necessary evil.. The prominent one is the rise in price of almost everything which is not affordable for the non-IT population... Though it hasnot denied the basic amenities to anyone, it has made the so-called sofisticated life - an unreachable fruit to many..

I could see one another drawback to this - Knowledge Drain.. Yeah, Loss of Knowledge...
nowadays, Engineering has become just a gateway to IT field, no matter which is your major. Few years back, if someone joins Civil engineering, for the four full years he will study the basics and concepts of Civil engineering... As rightly said, Nothing is complete when you are not practically working. what you read is mostly theory in your under graduation. He will join work in his respective technical field, say in this case, a Civil engineering job. He will first work as an assistant to a well experienced Boss. He will practically see the concepts working, the practical difficulties, and solutions to overcome them... Thus in few years, he will be well equiped to design his own plan.. His core expertise helps him in fixing everything related to civil not only at his office, but also at his home, surroundings...

A Complete Engineer is one who knows the basics of all Engineering subjects.. That is the reason, we are asked to learn the basics of all engineering subjects in the first year of an Engineering curriculum. Even at work, different departments got to work/interfact on each other and appreciate their work for executing their task...An electrical engineer will have to interact with mechanical engineer and vise-versa and its the same for any other engineer.. Thus when you are at a technical industry, u become a complete engineer, thanks to the various technical industries which keeps multiple brains employed.

This practical knowledge helps that person to innovate, fix, remodel anything if he has any need at home.. He can build his own burglar-alarm system, clocks, and tiny tiny day to day needs..
My father is an electical engineer. When we were kids, he used to fix any kind of small problems at home - not limited to Electrical Engineering alone but related to almost anything that we see/use in our day to day life... I used to be surprised at his skills... He is a complete engineer and this knowledge comes out of his experience.

But these days, whatever we Engineers study as a major, most of us are into IT. The subjects we read during the entire 4 year Engineering carrer, the knowledge our professors transferred to us, all of them just go away as we dont use them at work or in day to day life.. Is this not Knowledge drain??

It is not just enough that an Engineer be an expert in everything related to computers. Writing complex software/Assembling a computer is not all in this world.World is not just computers. There are many other things in this world that a common should know. Not just rely on others even to fix the very basic/minor problems at home/elsewhere.

An ideal Engineer is one who puts into work, what all he has learnt and this will lead to innovations in technical industries which will also help in booming our Economy. Today from soaps, pastes, cool drinks, to TV, bikes, cars, we import from foreign countries and it is a prestige to have them.. We have to change this situation atleast in fear of losing the knowledge. For the future generations we have to give them more than what we actually learnt. If this situation continues, we would end up giving them very less, which would one day be of no use.

Non-IT industries has to do something to attract the brains. When young engineers get to work in technical/non-IT industries, it will lead to lot more innovations/inventions as they had their basics trained in their Engineering. He can explore and experiment everything. In future, mabe far future, this would ultimately lead to new inventions, better products, and more friendly utilities.

We should stop exporting brains and start exporting the products of these brains, so that still its we, the India who owns the brains...
